Songkran Festival

The Songkran festival from the Sanskrit word saṃkrānti, or literally "astrological passage"is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year's Day from 13 to 15 April. Songkran has traditionally been celebrated as the New Year for many centuries, and is believed to have been adapted from the Sankranti Hindu festival. It is now observed nationwide and it has become a party for foreigners and an additional reason for many to visit Thailand for an immersion in Thai culture. The most known way of celebrating Songkran is the throwing of water upon others. Thais roam the streets with containers of water or water guns. In addition, many Thais will have small bowls of beige colored talc mixed with water which is smeared on the faces and bodies of random passersby as a blessing for the new year. It is very common to have groups of Thais post themselves at the side of roads or corners of intersections with garden hoses and water guns filled with ice cold water that is used to drench sidewalkers and random vehicles (taxis, cars, motorcycles, tuk tuks) that come within watering range. The songkran festival is counted as a new life festivity.

 People  Elephant

The throwing of water originated as a way to pay respect to people, by capturing the water after it had been poured over the Buddhas for cleansing and then using this "blessed" water to give good fortune to elders and family by gently pouring it on the shoulder. Among young people the holiday evolved to include dousing strangers with water to relieve the heat, since April is the hottest month in Thailand. The water is meant as a symbol of washing all of the bad away and is sometimes filled with fragrant herbs when celebrated in the traditional manner.

Besides the throwing of water, people celebrating Songkran as a
Buddhist festival may also go to a wat (Buddhist monastery) to pray and give food to monks. They may also cleanse Buddha images from household shrines as well as Buddha images at monasteries by gently pouring water mixed with a Thai fragrance over them. It is believed that doing this will bring good luck and prosperity for the New Year. Some people make New Year resolutions - to refrain from bad behavior, or to do good things. Songkran is a time for cleaning and renewal. Besides washing household Buddha images, many Thais also take this opportunity to give their home a thorough cleaning.

     Buddha   Monks

At Rocky's we celebrate Songkran in both the traditional and the fun way. Activities are planned all day around the beach area and the Dining Room Restaurant. We will have a blessing ceremony in the morning in which our guests can pour water over an image from Buddha. Then we will have a a drum parade around the resort in whcih all of our staff will participate. For lunch we will serve some delicious Thai food at the Thai Bistro. We will also have many games on the beach and of course a water war. In the evening we will have a a Royal Thai Kantok Dinner with live music and a traditional Thai Show.

In Easter we will serve a traditional Easter Lunch, and we will have a treasure hunt for the children.
Testimonials from our Guests

If your coming from the U.S., Rocky's is the only destination to consider on Samui,

Rocky's welcomed us with open arms and an open heart after a glorious Thai visit to our son studying abroad. The food was a joy to eat, the service lovely and the personal attention was completely unexpected and spectacular. The jaunty and personal resort manager and guest director just seemed to always be there to anticipate our needs. The perfect water temperature of the pool and ocean, Sang Som (Thai) Rum at the bar, access the the ocean floor (snorkeling), and the spectacular Ang Thong National Marine Park make this a wonderful place to leave it all behind.

We had our Thai Cooking lesson at Rocky's- a must on a Thai visit. Chef Um was our personal tutor, and spent more time than he could possibly have to help us cook the dishes and give us a complete primer of how to balance Salty, Sour, Spicy, and Sweet. Oh yeah, his signature dishes in "The Thai Bistro" ain't too shabby. If you're going to come this far (Northeast US), Rocky's is the place to land.

Stayed here on our honeymoon. Beautiful resort. Very friendly people. Food was delicious. Delighted with our stay here. The beach was private and secluded. You require a taxi to lamai or chaweng but the hotel also provides daily ttransport to the towns
